Senior Vice President

There’s one thing that stands out about Trevor Bakken the moment you meet him – it’s clear he’s not your typical lender. While 21st Century Bank’s Senior Vice President of Commercial Lending has decades of experience and a decorated career, he’s down-to-earth, relatable and reliable. And he pushes himself daily to grow and advance in his day-to-day work.

“Our biggest competition is ourselves,” he said. “Everyone has the same products, rates, and terms – but what separates us from other people is being honest and being fair.”

In his role here at 21st Century Bank, Bakken is tapping into his 20+ years in banking to leverage products and services aimed at supporting our small business banking and lending customers.

Bakken has worked in the banking business since 1997 – from Chicago to Dallas, and now the Twin Cities. Prior to joining 21st Century Bank, Bakken worked in auto finance, real estate, and commercial lending.

Through the years, Bakken decided that the best way to make a difference in his clients’ lives is by creating a lasting, trusting relationship and responding rapidly to clients. “People want to know that they are important. If they reach out to you, the least you can do is return the favor,” he said.

And when it comes to his career at 21st Century Bank, Bakken said he’s excited for the opportunity to work for a community bank that treats each customer as the unique individual they are.

“Here, you’re not just a number, you’re a person,” he said. Bakken prides himself on being a partner to his clients, focusing on a deep connection rather than sales – listening, communicating, and managing clear expectations as core aspects of his partnerships.

When looking back on his career, the best advice Bakken would give himself is to truly believe in what you’re doing. “If you’re doing the best job that you can, in the end, you will be successful,” he said.

Bakken encourages all entrepreneurs out there that it’s important to quickly dust yourself off when life gets you down – because, in business, that happens a lot. “Those moments will truly define you,” said Bakken. “And they become an incredible way to grow, and flourish, in your career, even your personal life.”

When he’s not in the office helping his clients, Bakken enjoys hitting the golf course. He immensely values his time with his daughter and often goes to his cabin.
